CHAPTER 13
Rosslyn Castle
BEN ENTERED THE inn's small car park and hurried to his car: an old, dented, blue Ford Mondeo estate. He opened the back door, laid the sword and shield inside and climbed into the driver's seat. He started the car and switched on the headlights. With hands gripping the wheel, he watched the torrent of raindrops briefly caught in the twin beams as they passed through on their journey from the heavens to the earth.
What the fuck am I doing? I'm about to risk my life for someone Iâve only just met, going against ruthless men with guns, which apparently I don't do. If the barman is to be believed, the kidnappers will have no qualms about seriously hurting, or even killing me, and all I have to defend myself with is an ancient sword and shield. I must be mad.
After activating the windscreen wipers, he headed for the castle along the lower road so the car wouldn't be seen or heard by those in the castle. By the time he pulled over and parked on a patch of grass next to the small track that led up to the castle, the incessant rain had slowed to a light drizzle.
Ben glanced along the track. All looked clear. The trees and bushes lining the sides of the path provided concealment from anyone who might be looking out of the castle windows. He collected the sword and shield from the back of the car; they felt uncomfortable and silly in his hands. He briefly considered leaving them behind but reasoned it was all he had and it was better than confronting the men totally unarmed. The shield made a good rain shield if nothing else he surmised, holding it over his head.
As he drew near to the castle, he spied lights in some of the windows; an indication someone was at home. He cautiously moved closer and surveyed the area, but detected no guards or lookouts.
Probably too confident any of the locals would dare rebel against them, let alone risk their wrath by attempting to rescue the old man. If nothing else, I'll have surprise on my side, especially when they see the sword and shield. Ben grinned at their imagined expressions.
The rain masked his footsteps on the shingle-covered bridge that spanned the gorge. Concealed behind a tall finger of masonry, Ben surveyed the cottage-like structure, the only habitable part of the building that remained. From this perspective, it was deceiving, as it resembled a typical Scottish rural cottage, not the castle it actually was. However, this was just the tip of a fortified building several stories high built into the steep rock of the gorge.
Parked on the drive were two cars and a white van; the kidnapper's vehicle. Malloch was here. Ben ran across a small open area, squeezed through a gap in a hedge and hugged the cottage wall. A furtive glance through a small window revealed only darkness inside. He moved to the corner of the building and peered around the side.
